Call Break, also written Callbreak, is a four-player trick-taking game hugely popular in India and Nepal. It is close to the Western game Spades, with one big difference: there are no partners. Every player bids, or "calls", how many tricks they will win, and the score rewards hitting your call exactly. It is a game of counting cards and judging your hand, with no money required to enjoy it.
The basics
- Players: 4, each playing for themselves.
- Deck: one standard 52-card deck, no jokers.
- Deal: 13 cards each.
- Trump suit: spades (♠) always beat other suits.
- Card order: A (high), K, Q, J, 10 down to 2.
- Game length: usually 5 rounds; the highest total wins.
Bidding (the call)
After looking at their cards, each player in turn calls the number of tricks they expect to win, from 1 to 13. The minimum call is usually 1, so no one can bid zero. Calls are not combined or compared; each player is trying to hit their own number.
Playing a trick
- The player after the dealer leads the first trick with any card. Many rule sets don't allow leading spades until a spade has been played.
- Each player must follow suit if they can.
- If you can follow suit, most rule sets require you to play a higher card than the highest already played in that suit, if you have one.
- If you cannot follow suit, you must play a spade if you have one (and beat any spade already played, if you can).
- If you have neither the led suit nor a spade, play any card.
- The highest spade wins the trick; if no spade was played, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner leads the next trick.
Scoring
- Make your call: you score the call as points, plus 0.1 for every extra trick (overtrick).
- Miss your call: you score minus the call.
| Call | Tricks won | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | +3.0 |
| 3 | 5 | +3.2 (3 + two overtricks) |
| 4 | 3 | −4 |
| 2 | 0 | −2 |
| 6 | 6 | +6.0 |
Some versions give a bonus for big calls, for example 13 points for a successful call of 8 or more. Overtricks are only worth a tenth of a point, so the scoring strongly rewards an accurate call over a cautious one.
A worked round
| Player | Call | Tricks | Round score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anil | 4 | 5 | +4.1 |
| Bina | 3 | 3 | +3.0 |
| Chetan | 2 | 1 | −2 |
| Divya | 3 | 4 | +3.1 |
Thirteen tricks were played (5 + 3 + 1 + 4). Chetan's one-trick shortfall cost him 2 full points, while Anil and Divya earned only 0.1 for each extra trick. That gap is why careful bidding wins Call Break.
Bidding tips
- Count sure tricks first: each ace is usually a trick; A-K in the same suit is usually two.
- Count spades separately: high spades (A, K, Q) win tricks, and a long spade suit (5 or more) wins extra tricks late in the round.
- Count voids and short suits: having no cards in a suit lets you trump with spades when it is led.
- Kings and queens are not guaranteed: a lone king of a non-trump suit often loses to the ace.
- Total check: if the four calls add up to well over 13, someone will miss. Play to protect your own call.
Playing tips
- Track spades: there are 13. Knowing how many are left tells you when your remaining spades are winners.
- Once you have made your call, avoid extra tricks that only earn 0.1, and play to make opponents miss instead.
- Lead your short suit early to create a void you can trump later.
- Watch who is short of their call near the end; they will fight for every trick.

Frequently asked questions
How is Call Break scored?
If you win at least as many tricks as you called, you score your call plus 0.1 for each extra trick. If you win fewer, you lose points equal to your call. Totals over five rounds decide the winner.
Is spade always trump in Call Break?
Yes. Spades are the permanent trump suit. Any spade beats any card of another suit, and a higher spade beats a lower one.
Do you have to play a higher card in Call Break?
In most rule sets, yes: if you can follow suit, you must beat the highest card played in that suit if you are able. If you cannot follow suit, you must trump with a spade if you have one.
What is the minimum call in Call Break?
Usually 1. Players cannot call zero in the standard game, and the maximum is 13.
