Classic teen patti is simple, and that is exactly why players invented variations. Wild cards, reversed rankings and extra cards keep the game fresh at long Diwali card nights, and most teen patti apps now include several of these modes. Every variation below starts from the standard rules and hand rankings; if you need a refresher, read our teen patti rules guide first.

1. AK47

Every Ace, King, 4 and 7 is a joker. Jokers can stand in for any card, so trails and sequences become far more common. With 16 wild cards in the deck, even a pair is weak in AK47.

AK47: K and 7 are wild, so this hand is a trail of nines

2. Muflis (Lowball)

The rankings are reversed: the lowest hand wins. The best possible Muflis hand is 2-3-5 of mixed suits, because it has no sequence, no colour and the lowest high cards. A trail becomes the worst hand you can hold.

3. Joker (Wild Card)

After the deal, one card is turned face up from the deck. Every card of that rank becomes a joker for the round. If a 9 is turned, all four nines are wild.

4. Lowest Joker

The lowest card in each player's own hand is their joker. This means every player has at least one wild card, and every hand ends up at least a pair.

Lowest Joker: 3♥ is wild, making a trail of queens

5. Highest Joker

The mirror image: the highest card in each hand is wild. Players with a high card lose it as a natural card but gain a joker, which makes for surprising results.

6. Best of Four

Each player gets four cards and uses the best three. Hands become stronger overall, so colours and sequences show up more often and pairs lose value.

7. 999

Hand rankings are ignored. Each player arranges their three cards into a three-digit number, and the player closest to 999 wins. Aces count as 1, cards 2 to 9 keep their face value, and 10, J, Q and K count as 0.

999: arranged as 998, a very strong hand

8. Stud

One or two of each player's cards are dealt face up. Everyone sees part of every hand, so betting becomes more about reading what is hidden.
